چکیده مقاله:

Background: Pulmonary disorders caused by parasites are common in many tropical regions. Acanthamoeba is an opportunistic parasite, and most of its dangerous complications are seen in patients with immune deficiencies. Considering the high dissemination of Acanthamoeba parasite in water, soil, and fine airborne dust in Iran, this research was performed to study the rate of pulmonary secretions infection to Acanthamoeba in patients with immune system disorder. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was done in one year (2017 to 2018) in Arak City. The study sample was selected from immunodeficient subjects who had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, too. The demographic data were also collected from all study samples. The respiratory sample was obtained from each selected patient by Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL). Each sample was examined by smear staining, cultivation, and molecular methods. Results: Out of 64 immunocompromised patients investigated in the current research, the Acanthamoeba infection was found in 100%, 98.4%, and 0% of their BAL with culture, molecular, and direct methods, respectively. Conclusion: The outcomes of our research indicated that selecting the diagnostic method in agreement with the kind of sample has a remarkable role in recognizing the contamination. The results of this research showed that the direct microscopy test of Giemsa stained smear was not suitable for detecting this kind of parasitic infection in the BAL sample. Therefore, awareness of the occurrence of Acanthamoebiasis in immunocompromised subjects is essential for preventing the dangerous complications of this parasite.

The Occurrence Acanthamoeba (Free Living Amoeba) in Environmental and Respiratory Samples in Poland

Free-living amoebae are amphizoic organisms living in soil, air, fresh and sea water. Species belonging to the genera Acanthamoeba, Naegleria and Balamuthia are human parasites, which may invade the central nervous system, lungs, adrenal glands, skin, eyes and lower jaw. In this paper, we examine the occurrence of potentially virulent strains of amoebae in water bodies of the West Pomeranian an...

Free-Living Amoeba Acanthamoeba Triggers Allergic Inflammation of Airways

An estimated 300 million people worldwide have asthma, and 250,000 deaths are attributed annually to the disease. From 2001 to 2009, the number of people diagnosed with asthma grew by 4.3 million. Allergic airway inflammation is closely related to airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), the production of mucus, and airway remodeling. This inflammation is mediated by the T helper type 2 (Th2)-cell res...

Pathogenic Free-living Amoeba

These are Acanthamoeba spp., Balamuthia mandrillaris (the only known species of Balamuthia), Naegleria fowleri (sometimes considered not to be an amoeba at all, but more closely related to Leishmania and Trypanosoma) and Sappinia pedata. They are distinct from the more famous Entamoeba histolytica (an obligate anaerobic parasite which can cause amoebiasis, amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver ab...

Temperature-dependent parasitic relationship between Legionella pneumophila and a free-living amoeba (Acanthamoeba castellanii).

We analyzed the effects of temperature on the interaction of Legionella pneumophila with Acanthamoeba castellanii. At <20 degrees C, overexpression of type 1 metacaspase, a stimulator of A. castellanii encystation, was associated with a reduced number of bacteria within amoeba. At low temperatures, A. castellanii seems to eliminate L. pneumophila by encystation and digestion.
